On 23 June Uría Menéndez received the award for Best Pro Bono Initiative at the eighth edition of the Expansión Jurídico Awards, run by Spain’s leading legal and economics newspaper.

This work is part of a broader project coordinated by the Ödos Programme, which is striving to eradicate cases of stateless children through strategic litigation and obtaining key precedents. The project focuses on a group largely unknown until now: “invisible children”. Due to the particular circumstances of their birth, these children do not have a birth certificate and are unregistered. Without the requisite documents they cannot obtain an identification document or the nationality of any state, meaning that in practice they are denied their most fundamental rights.

This case has generated an important precedent that will help combat child statelessness.
